The Andoni Local Government Area in Rivers has inaugurated a 10-man committee to check leakages in revenue remittances by oil companies operating in the area.
Mr Erastus Awortu, Chairman of the council, while inaugurating members of the committee on Wednesday in Ngo, a riverine community, urged them to carry out their task with a sense of commitment and accountability.
Awortu raised concerns over the non-compliant attitude of operating companies in the area.
According to him, revenue remittance and corporate social responsibility, which should practically boost social infrastructure in the area, had been mared by irregularities.
The committee is chaired by Mr Gogomary Oyet, while Mr Tele Etete would serve as the Secretary.
Other members include Mr ThankGod Esuuk, Mr Quizeman Gogo, Mr Shedrack Okereke, Mr Emmanuel Awortu, Mr Ugem Ogbologugo, Mr Emmmanuel Arong, Mr Igana Festus and Mr Awaji Inwon.
The council boss urged the committee to identify companies culpable of tax evasion and non-adherence to the binding rules on corporate social responsibility in the area.
He, however, cautioned them against abuse of office.
In a related development, Awortu advised local government workers against laxity as he played host to the council’s chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).
He noted that the civil workforce was key to good governance.
Mr John Ishmeal, Chairman of the union, applauded the leadership style of the new council boss, describing it as people-oriented.
“NULGE in Andoni is impressed by your achievements, in less than 100 days in office, secutity, human capital development, infrastructure, as well as workers welfare have begun to enjoy some positive attention.(NAN)
