United Kingdom chapter of Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has inaugurated a transition committee to pilot the affairs of the body in the interim.

A statement on Thursday by the Chairman of the transition committee, Dr Azuka Benson and Secretary, Dr Bennet Onwuzurike, said the constitution of the committee was imperative following widespread outcry of Ndigbo in the UK over the numerous irregularities that characterised the recent Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK election held on Nov. 20.

The statement disclosed that the inauguration of the transition committee was part of resolutions reached at a meeting of the General House held in London on Dec. 11 and comprising Ndigbo in the UK under the umbrella of Ohanaeze.

“The general house acknowledges the widespread outcry of Ndigbo in the UK and takes cognisance of the numerous irregularities that marred the Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK, Nov. 20, 2021 election.

“The general house adopts in its entirety the independent opinion and advice of the Forum for the Advancement of Igbo Race  (FAIR), over the numerous irregularities that flawed the purported election as detailed in the referenced document.

“The general house notes specifically that contrary to the constitution of Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK, only two delegates were allowed to vote from preselected Ohanaeze Affiliate Member Organisations, (AMOs), clearly disenfranchising other delegates on trumped up allegations that the AMOs are splinter groups of State Unions.

“Taking cognisance of these irregularities, the general house unanimously agrees that the Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK election of Nov. 20, 2021 is repugnant to the constitution and convention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

“It is also repugnant to the culture of Ndigbo which has recently been adjudged to be the cradle of democracy.

“The general house unanimously declared  election unconstitutional, null and void and  consequently appointed a five-man transition committee which was immediately inaugurated by the general house.

“The committee will manage the affairs of Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK for an interim period of three months, with a mandate to advise and conduct a credible election,” the organisation stated.

According to the statement, members of the five-man transition committee are Dr Azuka Benson (Chairman) and Dr Bennet Onwuzurike (Secretary), Chief Charles Anyanwu, Mazi Chris Dike, and Mazi Uche Kay.

The general house, the statement said, also resolved that all properties belonging to Ohanaeze UK in whatever form and wherever located “must be surrendered to the transition committee with immediate effect”, just as it urged the women and the youth wings to continue to give their unalloyed cooperation to the committee.

It pledged its full support to the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

It also urged Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide to accord the committee all necessary support and advice in its quest to rebuild and reposition the chapter as a reckoning force for progress in the global comity of Ohanaeze. (NAN) (
