The Speaker, Plateau House of Assembly, Mr Abok Ayuba, has urged Nigerians to defend the unity and uphold the sanctity of the nation as the country marked the 60th anniversary of its independence.
Ayuba in a statement by his Press Secretary, Mr Bulus Atang, said that doing so was in line with the pledge of allegiance to the country by being patriotic in all dealings.
The speaker advised Nigerians to reflect on the state of the nation by contributing their quota in overcoming numerous challenges confronting the country.
“Nigerians should endeavour to build on the contributions of founding fathers.
“Those in leadership positions and followers should work in unison and have love for country if Nigeria will take its rightful place among the comity of nations.”
The lawmaker described the youth as the greatest asset to the nation in whose hands the future lies.
The speaker enjoined them to shun negative tendencies and cultivate virtues of patriotism, commitment and dedication in serving the country.
According to him, notwithstanding the problems of nation-building which the country may be grappling with at the moment, the Nigeria spirit is alive and should continue to be nourished as the vehicle of national transformation.
Ayuba congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari and Gov. Simon Lalong as well as lauded the present administration over its efforts at improving the living standards of Nigerians.
He assured that the 9th State Assembly would continue to work in unison with other arms of government for the common good of the state.
The speaker advised citizens to remain steadfast and courageous to overcome adversity as a people.
He, however, appealled to all and sundry to accord the present administration the desired support and cooperation for it to succeed.
